Cognitive function stacks are not in the 70 items
A large share of MBTI writing after Jung assigns each type an eight-function stack, Ni then Te then Fi then Se, and talks as if a quiz had measured the stack. The 16-type test on this site does not. Each item scores one side of one dichotomy. The output is four tallies and four letters. There is no item written for “introverted intuition,” no function score, and no basis in these answers for printing a stack.
Jung’s 1921 book described attitudes and functions as a theory. The questionnaire tradition that became the MBTI turned four contrasts into items. The stacks came later, mostly as teaching and as fan writing. If a result page hands you Ni-Te-Fi-Se from a dichotomy quiz, it is decorating the letters. The methodology page lists what the 70 items add up to, and the list stops at the four tallies.
Wings, arrows, and instincts are not in the 36 items
The Enneagram test credits points to nine types and stops. A wing is the neighboring type some teachers attach to the core. Stress and growth arrows are a diagram from the same tradition. Instinctual variants are a third layer. None of those has a tally here. The Type 4 wings post says the narrower version of this: wings are a teaching tradition, not a measured fact, and our test does not report them.
If your result was a close finish, the runner-up is the number to read. Inventing a wing from a one-point gap goes past what the scores support. Hook and colleagues’ 2021 review, cited on the methodology page, is already a caution about the basic types. The extra labels have less published support than that, not more.
Facets need items we did not write
In longer tests, the Big Five factors split into facets. Conscientiousness splits into order, dutifulness, and several others. Extraversion splits into warmth, assertiveness, and others again. Those distinctions show up in instruments built to measure them, with several items per facet. Our Big Five test has ten items for the whole factor. Ten items can point at the factor. They cannot support a facet profile, and the result does not print one.
Commercial DISC products sell subscales under each style. Our DISC test has five items a style. The guide on that page is the claim to use: twenty items can rank the four styles for most people, and they cannot carry the fine subscales.
The paragraph a quiz site adds anyway
The pressure in this category is to print more labels than the items earned. A shadow function. A tritype. A compatibility percentage with a stranger’s code. Each one is a sentence generator sitting on a small tally. The type guides describe the code the test can actually produce. The misread and the growth edge on those pages are writing about the tradition, not a second score.
If you want the part that was calculated, look at the tallies or the five numbers. If a sentence on a type page has no tally behind it, read it as a description from the tradition, and check it against a specific week of your own before you adopt it. The about page says the same thing in the disclaimer: a type code is a description of answers, not a diagnosis and not a screen.
What the result page is allowed to print
The 16-type result is eight counts and four letters. Extraversion/Introversion and Judging/Perceiving are 17 items, so a tie cannot happen. The closest finish is 9 to 8. Sensing/Intuition and Thinking/Feeling are 18 items, so 9 to 9 is possible, and the tie goes to S and to T. There is no function stack in that output.
The Big Five result is five numbers. Each is the average of that factor’s items, after the reverse-keyed ones are flipped, stretched to 0-100. The formula is on the methodology page: an average of 4 out of 5 prints 75. The code also stores whichever factor was highest, as a short label for your history. That label is not a type. Read the five numbers.
The Enneagram result is nine point totals. They add up to 36, because each chosen option credits exactly one type. The winner is a label. The useful part is the gap to second place. A 14 to 13 finish is one item. Inventing a wing from that gap goes past the items.
DISC is four averages, the same stretch as the Big Five, five items a style. A second letter is added only when that score is above 50. D at 80 and I at 40 prints D, not DI. The 40 did not clear the cutoff, and neither number is a percentile.
