Working with an IC

The 9pm email is the pattern to plan around. Asked something cold in a room of ten, an IC hedges; the good answer arrives that evening, once they've checked it. Put the question in writing beforehand and they'll bring that answer to the meeting instead. Correction should be surgical: fix the work in one sentence, keep the rest of the message in your normal voice, and skip the general remark about their approach, because they'll reread the whole thread four times working out what you meant by it. If you want them faster, give permission out loud. "A rough number today beats a right one Friday" works, and they'll believe you the second time you say it and mean it.

An IC is the teammate who makes the complicated thing understandable, so the team routes every explanation through them and the cost never shows up on anyone's dashboard. Watch their meeting load. Their two instincts pull against each other in public settings, and the visible symptom is a diplomatic answer that took a long time to say very little; if you asked for their opinion and got the balanced version, ask again for the one without the diplomacy, because they have it. After a disagreement an IC worries they were too blunt, when the usual problem was the opposite. Telling them once that the conversation was fine saves them an evening of rereading it.

Common questions about IC

I and C look contradictory. Can both really be high?

They pull in different directions, which is what makes the blend distinctive rather than impossible. It shows up as someone sociable about accurate things: happy to present, unwilling to present something unchecked. Watch the ninety seconds before you speak to a group. If you're rehearsing the content, that's the C. If you're reading the room, that's the I. An IC does both and treats the first one as non-negotiable.

Does an IC belong in client-facing work or analytical work?

The result doesn't answer that, and asking it of DISC is a common misuse. The test describes how you prefer to behave, not what you're good at or what you'd still enjoy in ten years. ICs do cluster in roles that need explaining as well as checking (technical support, teaching, analyst work with a presentation attached), but that's a pattern, not a recommendation. Interest and skill decide job fit. A 20-question questionnaire doesn't.
